Gail Marie at her desk in her studio

Hi, I’m Gail Marie.

“Artful living” is what I try to do every day as a human being, not an artist. However, making art and writing connect me to life in a way little else does, likely because they force my attention and somehow slow time.

And that’s what artful living is — being thoughtful about how we spend our time and attention, which is all (and everything) we have.

This website is where I record my progress, ideas, work, and who knows what else.

The Broad Strokes

  • I’m in my 50s and married to a woman born and raised on Maui. We live on her family’s land with two cats and a dog.

  • After a childhood in the Midwest, I earned degrees in philosophy and literature. I settled down in Minnesota until my early 30s, when I moved to Durham, North Carolina. In 2016, I moved to Maui and met my now-wife a year later on the only blind date either of us has been on. In 2024 I decided to try oil painting. Until recently, I’ve made money helping others market their business. Now I’m marketing my own.

  • I grew up coming to Hawaii on vacation with my family and continued to do so as an adult. It’s the only place I want to be. The best part about going on vacation is coming home.
